Discrete Geodesics, Waves and Harmonic Maps on Surfaces

Geodesic curves are a fundamental concept in mathematics to generalize the idea of a straight line to curves on arbitrary smooth surfaces and to smooth manifolds. We define the notion of "discrete" geodesic curves on polygonal surfaces, which allows us to transfer some properties of smooth surfaces to polygonal surfaces. As an application we define higher order integration methods for the integration of vector fields on polygonal surfaces, and study point waves on surfaces.

In the second part of the talk we study discrete versions of harmonic maps, and define an algorithm to compute the conjugate harmonic map. This has recently led to the numerical construction of new minimal surfaces and compact constant mean curvature examples.
