Biomedical Imaging at Columbia University: Building Bridges between Engineering and Medicine

The Center of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia Univesity recently recieved a ,000,000 Development Award from the Whitaker Foundation. The major thrust of the award will be towards the development of a world class graduate research program in the area of biomedical imaging. This talk will consist of two parts: In the first part I will present an overview of proposed academic and research programs to be developed over the next four years at Columbia University. This will include a description of new courses, laboratories and facilities needed to support both academic and research programs. In the seond part, I will describe in overview selected current research projects in the area of biomedical imaging, including digital mammography, cardiac PET imaging, functional MRI of the brain (fMRI), quanitifcation of cardiac volumes from 4D ultrasound, and analysis of micro CT of bone to predict fracture from structure models.
