Automata and transcendence of the Tate period in finite characteristic

This is a joint work with D. S. Thakur, where we give a proof using automata that the period of the Tate elliptic curve is transcendental in finite characteristic. This is a function field analogue of Mahler-Manin conjecture (this last conjecture was proved by Barre-Sirieix, Diaz, Gramain, Philibert).

This result was first proved by Voloch. A simpler proof already using automata theory was then given by Thakur. The proof we present is essentially a result in automata theory using theorems of Cobham and Christol, and a number-theoretic theorem due to Rankin.
