INTERACTIVE VOLUME VISUALIZATION FOR 3D BIOMEDICAL IMAGING
Due to their unique image characteristics, many biomedical data visualization problems, such as 3D microscopy visualization, are not effective using conventional volume visualization techniques. These applications often require highly interactive visualization techniques and environments for user controlled data exploration. In this presentation, several interactive volume visualization and data exploration techniques we recently developed will be described. Their applications on 3D microscopy visualization will also be discussed. These techniques include: (1) an image-based transfer function design method that combines image processing and visualization in one integrated system; (2) an immersive volume visualization technique using the CAVE/ImmersaDesk VR systems for 3D interactive data manipulation and visualization; (3) an interactive volume rendering algorithm using 2D texture mapping for low-end workstations and PC platforms; (4) A collaborative tele-visualization technique using high speed networks. Finally, two software systems, the "3DIVE" system developed for CAVE and ImmersaDesk facilities, and the "IVIE" system developed for low-end workstations and PC platforms, will also be described.
